Ola manuia of Pacific peoples in Aotearoa


This document shows how Dayspring Trust will meet the needs of Pacific peoples in Aotearoa and their whānau who access our services.

Policy

We provide comprehensive and equitable maternal mental health services underpinned by Pacific worldviews and developed in collaboration with Pacific peoples for improved health outcomes.

Scope

The processes described apply to all staff and all people seeking or engaging with our service who are (NZ born or a migrant) from the Pacific nations.

Data Collection

Dayspring Trust will collect data on:

  • How many service consumers identify as peoples from the various Pacific nations.

  • How many staff identify as from the various Pacific nations

  • How many Board members identify as from the various Pacific nations

  • Training completed by staff in Pacific cultural competency in healthcare

Dayspring’s cultural competency

An independent Pacific Health Plan will be developed to articulate and action Dayspring Trust’s commitment to improving equity of access and outcomes Ola manuia Pacific peoples and their whānau. This plan will have realistic yet ambitious goals with realistic timeframes.

Culturally competent workforce

Dayspring Trust will respect the values and beliefs of Pacific peoples and their whanau by having a culturally and clinically competent workforce who will:

  • Attend cultural competency training

  • Attend training in Pacific models of Care (ie The Fonofale model created as a Pacific model of health, encompassing values and beliefs from the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Niue, and Tokelau).

Dayspring Trust will support our staff by:

  • Provide or support access to a cultural advisor

  • Provide or support access to Pacific models of health literature

  • Maintain links with Te Whatu Ora Pacific Mental Health Services

Cultural Support

Dayspring Trust will provide/offer appropriate cultural support for clients who are from the Pacific nations such as and not limited to:

  • Culturally appropriate resources

  • Service provision that aligns with Fonofale model of Pacific healthcare

  • Advocacy via HDC Advocacy Service 

  • Offer the services of an interpreter

  • Written material on consumer rights in the various Pacific languages

  • A referral to Pacific specific service provider
